Exploring Accelerated Orthodontics with DTC Glory II Series Self-Ligating Brackets

In modern orthodontics, adult patients increasingly request expedited treatment times due to personal milestones, relocation, or academic enrollment. Safely accelerating tooth movement while maintaining high clinical standards of care is a major focus for dental professionals.

A clinical case report published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Cureus (DOI: 10.7759/cureus.84808) demonstrates a highly efficient orthodontic approach. In this case, the clinician utilized from the Al Dhafra Madinat zayed Hospital, Dr. Uday Kumar Alle choose the Glory II series, Self-Ligating Brackets by DTC to successfully complete a complex orthodontic correction in just three months using a novel 10-day adjustment interval.

1. Diagnosis & Patient Baseline

The patient was a medically fit 19-year-old female presenting with a chief complaint of "sticking-out top front teeth" and a desire to complete her treatment within three months due to impending travel.

Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed:

  • A "class I bilateral molar relationship and class II div 1 incisor relationship on a class I skeletal base".

  • "Proclined maxillary incisors (U1-PP 136°)" with an "overjet of 7.5 mm".

  • "Upper left first and second premolars" in "lingual crossbite", and "lower anterior teeth" exhibiting "mild crowding".

  • A significant "non-consonant and reverse smile arc".

2. The Choice of Appliance: DTC Glory II Series Self-ligating Brackets

To tackle this highly restricted timeframe, the doctor selected a non-extraction approach employing "pre-adjusted edgewise appliances (0.022" x 0.028" slot) with a metal passive SLB with a metal rigid sliding gate of MBT prescription (DTC, Glory II series, Mini Self-Ligating Brackets, Newark, DE, USA)".

The Glory II series was selected for its key clinical advantages in rapid alignment:

  1. Passive Self-Ligation for Minimal Friction: The "passive metal SLB" design is engineered to significantly reduce frictional resistance at the bracket-archwire-ligature interface. This enables steady tooth movement with light, continuous forces.

  2. Robust Rigid Sliding Gate: The "metal rigid sliding gate" provides a secure, reliable lock. It simplifies archwire changes, greatly reducing chairside time and maintaining patient comfort during frequent adjustments.

  3. Mini Profile and Patient Comfort: The refined, low-profile dimensions of the Mini series minimize mucosal irritation, which is crucial when adjustments are scheduled closely together.

3. The Treatment Protocol & Archwire Sequencing

The innovative protocol combined "10-day appointment intervals" with "rapid archwire sequencing".

  • Alignment: The treatment initiated with "0.012” thermal nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires" with V bends incorporated.

  • Progression: The archwires progressed rapidly from "0.012" thermal NiTi to 0.018" superelastic NiTi" (including 0.014", 0.016", and 0.018" superelastic NiTi). Intrusion bends were placed distal to the canines to correct the deep bite.

  • Torque and Space Control: Upper incisor proclination correction was managed with "short intermaxillary elastics 1/4" and 3.5 oz", progressing to rectangular archwires from "0.016" x 0.022" superelastic NiTi to 0.017" x 0.025" superelastic NiTi". An "elastic chain (Storino Leash)" was applied to control incisor proclination and close spaces.

4. Outcomes and Long-term Stability

After only three months of active treatment, the appliances were debonded, and the results achieved met expectations:

  • U1-PP improved from 136° to 126°, with a "retraction of 4 mm".

  • The overjet was normalized, the lingual crossbite was corrected, and the reverse curve of the smile was resolved, achieving a highly aesthetic "consonant smile arc".

  • Post-treatment panoramic radiographs confirmed "improved root parallelism and no noted root resorption or pathology".

  • Remarkably, at the one year and four months post-debonding follow-up, the patient’s intraoral photographs demonstrated "excellent maintenance of treatment results" with superb stability.

Conclusion

The DTC Glory II series self-ligating brackets demonstrated excellent performance in this challenging, fast-paced clinical case. By combining passive self-ligation, reliable locking mechanisms, and patient comfort, Glory II brackets provided the clinician with a secure, highly predictable tool to facilitate accelerated orthodontic treatment without compromising safety or stability.

DTC remains dedicated to manufacturing world-class orthodontic solutions, partnering with clinicians to deliver safe, efficient, and beautiful smiles.
